The 2021 Summer Workplace:
The work landscape will look a little different as we head into the summer of 2021. In previous years, university students have been able to gain valuable work experience by securing full-time positions in a variety of industries. As we saw last summer in 2020, many companies reduced the number of student positions available which left many students without work. Twenty-twenty one will surely pose a challenge to many students as they struggle to gain work experience this summer.
When to look:
If you have not secured a job this summer, there is still time. Be diligent about your search. Many companies will continue to hire for available positions going forward into April and May. The unique situation of the workplace this year increases the number of opportunities available to students. With the majority of individuals working virtually from home, students are able to apply for jobs across Canada.
Where to look:
There are a variety of places to look for when searching for summer employment. Indeed and Glassdoor have always been the optimal place to find jobs and to locate those who are hiring. As a result of this, make sure to search through these sites regularly to learn what positions are available in your city or province. LinkedIn is also a great tool for students. Take advantage of your current network or reach out to professionals who’s jobs interest you. This will allow you to make meaningful connections and put your name out there. If you have a specific company in mind, go directly to their website. Visit their careers page and apply to any positions you find of interest. Early talent recruiters continue to hire for the summer through the months of April and May. Many universities also have job boards available to their students so make sure you take a look to see if there are any positions available which interest you. These positions are ideal for university students who wish to stay around campus for the summer.
There are also opportunities to work with the Ontario or Federal government. The Ontario Government hires students each year for the Ontario Public Service. There are currently over 70 jobs available within a variety of fields such as business, engineering, policy, science, and technology. The Federal government is offering their Federal Student Work Experience Program to students who are looking to gain meaningful work experience. If you meet the eligibility requirements for these positions, make sure to apply!
Volunteering is also a great way to gain experience this summer. Look into volunteering in your city or region. There are many positions available for summer 2021 ranging from administrative positions to working with children. Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community while gaining experience in fields of your interest.
Securing summer employment in twenty-twenty one has been difficult for many. Although many companies have been reducing the number of positions available to students, there are many opportunities still available. If you are struggling, continue to search diligently, and good luck!
